• Tallis' Lamentation (FA)

Tallis’ Lamentation is a musical essay on a beautiful melody by the English composer Thomas Tallis (1505-1585). Tallis was the most influential English composer of the renaissance period and presided over the most dynamic period in English musical history, during which the continental style of structural imitation was largely adopted by English composers. Though Tallis' music includes a wide range of styles and objectives, lyrical ideas usually dominate his musical impulses. In this arrangement for band, a slow mysterious opening featuring plaintive solo voices leads to an exciting rhythmic statement of the melody. A stronger, more 'earthy' section lead by Trombones with florid interjections from Soprano, Solo Cornet and flugal culminates in a bright, optimistic close.
