This Trombone solo is written for Brett Baker of the Black Dyke Band and is built around the hymn tune Liebster Immanuel which dates from 1679. A fast, lively main theme derived from the original theme eventually leads to a plaintive statement of this beautiful melody in its original form before an exciting end.
The mood of words from Liebster Immanuel penetrates the whole work and gives it an inner cohesion:
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,
Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid;
Star of the east, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.
