Netherlands: Repertorium 3e Divisie Harmonie
THE COMPOSITION
La Rambla or Les Rambles (spanish Las Ramblas) is a 1.258,59 metre long pedestrian mall in the centre of Barcelona, connecting the Plaça de Catalunya with the harbour. It is flanked by a street on either side. At the north end of La Rambla is the old town
quarter of Barri Gòtic and at the southern end is El Raval. La Rambla is divided into five separate sections which officially count as different streets. However, it is uncommon to name these streets separately. Each of these sections has its own character. For example, Rambla de Sant Josep is known for its many flower shops. Street artists and musicians can be found on one of the other sections, and pet shops on yet another section. The following is a list and description of the different sections of La Ramble, starting at the Plaça de Catalunya and moving towards the harbour.
Rambla de Canaletes
The Rambla de Canaletes is connected to the Plaça de Catalunya and is famous for the Font de Canaletes. According to legend, whoever drinks from this fountain will always return to Barcelona. This part of La Rambla is a favourite spot and meeting point of the fans of FC Barcelona.
Rambla dels Estudis
In the olden days this section was lined with buildings from the institute of higher education, hence the name. Today, the only building remaining from that time is the Science Academy (House number 114).
Rambla de Sant Josep
This section of the street is known for its many permanently installed flower stalls and is therefore also called Rambla de les Flors. This is the location of the Palau de la Virreina and the Mercat de la Boqueria.
Rambla dels Caputxins
This street hosts, amongst others, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Cafe de l’Opera. In addition, the lavishly laid-out town square Plaça Reial can be accessed from this street.
Rambla de Santa Mònica
La Rambla This is the location of the 68 metre high Columbus pillar with a viewing platform, situated in the centre of a traffic roundabout in the harbour area.
