BLAZE!

The composition ”BLAZE!” was written by Hendrik de Boer for brassband 'Blaast de Bazuin' Surhuisterveen in honor of their 125th anniversary in 2024. The title ”BLAZE!” can be approached in two ways. In English it means 'glow': the proverbial fire on the cheeks with which the musicians practicing their beloved hobby. On the other hand,  translated from Frisian it means 'blowing': what it's all about in the end: blowing on a copper instrument. The composition itself is written in a traditional sonata form. The work begins with a brief introduction before the euphoniums exhibit the first lyrical theme. This theme is taken over by the flugelhorn and horns followed by a transitional section introduces the second second theme (in the dominant key). This second theme is, contrasting to the first theme, more energetic in character. After a brief confirmation, to emphasize the conclusion of the second theme, the first and second themes become repeats. However, various changes in instrumentation and voice leading ensure the necessary variation in this passage. In the subsequent development it is done through the use of thematic material from the first and second themes in various keys builds up tension created, which at its climax culminates in a chorale passage in which it first and second themes are interwoven. After this climax there will be some relaxation takes place, which then turns into a majestic reprise of it first and second theme. In this reprise there is a lot to be said from the cornet group 'signal work' can be heard: a musical reference to the instrument the 'Bazuin(Trumpet)', to which the association owes its name. The work ends with an energetic coda grand and optimistic: confidently on the way to the future!
